Christine Visit

Thursday, April 29th, 2004

Christine is in town for work yesterday and today. We picked her up from the metro after work yesterday and stopped at the Dreamery, drove by the new house, hung out at home for a bit, then met Big Sue and Ryan at FireFlies. We confirmed that we’re on for visiting Brigantine again this year. Also got to hear stories of Ateles’ (their retriever puppy) exploits.

Was good to see Christine. We need to get up to visit them soon.

Sold the House

Thursday, April 29th, 2004

Heather and I closed on the sale of 11 E. Mason Ave. yesterday. No longer members of the landed gentry, we’re renters once again. (Well, we’re not paying rent but we are living in a house someone else owns.) Watching the wind blow last night it occurred to me that if a tree fell on the house or the place burned to the ground it was no longer my problem. (aside from managing to get out of the house I guess.) It was quite liberating.

We close on the new house on Monday.

Correction – 1st Place!

Dad called me at work this morning to tell me that according to the newspaper he and I took 1st place in our division in the race last weekend! Yaaaahooo!

Sunday we had brunch in Pennsylvania with a bunch of Heather’s family. Dad Callahan was in a mischievious mood (I’ve observed that this is not unusual when he’s around children) and he decided to see if Fiona liked applesauce. He put a tiny amount on a spoon and into her mouth. Fiona’s facial expression left no room for doubt – she did _not_ like the applesauce. Ever the troublemaker, Dad C tried it again though. Once again, Fiona’s expression made it abundantly clear that she wanted nothing at all to do with the applesauce. Then, to make sure everybody understood exactly what her thougts were on the applesauce issue, Fiona threw up on Dad C’s lap.

We are truly fontunate in that Heather was recording the moment, so we have this for posterity in full motion video and sound. If I get motivated it might even make it’s way up onto this site.

Early Sunday morning Mom, Fiona and I were sitting in the den at Mom and Dad’s place. Fiona was rolling around on a blanket on the floor, checking things out, putting things in her mouth and generally doing things that happy, inquisitive babies do. Then all at once in a flurry of coordinated limbs and balance she sat up all on her own! She has been able to stay upright when someone puts her in a seated position, but we’d never seen her go from lying down to sitting all on her own before. Granted, she did not have a diaper on at the time, so she had a slight advantage in leverage. But over the next couple hours she refined her newfound technique and was able to sit up when fully diapered and clothed. The technique still isn’t perfect, but she came a long way in one morning!

That same morning we saw her get onto her hands and knees for the first time and rock around a little bit. First steps toward crawling mabye??

2nd place in our division – OH YA BABY!! River was higher this year than last, so we didn’t have to worry about getting hung up on rocks so much. The current also made the whole thing a lot faster and less pain-inducing than last year. We shaved just about 45 minutes off our time last year, coming it at just about 1 hour 15 minutes for the 8.5 mile course.

Our group of folks had 6 canoes/kayaks out racing and fun was had by all. Afterwards we cooked hot dogs and burgers over the campfire in front of mom & dad’s place and basked in the glory. Was a great day for it – when we got up it was foggy and 32 degrees, but by race time (around 9am) it had gone up into the 50′s and was sunny.

Pictures are here.

New Server

Monday, April 26th, 2004

I’ve switched the site to yet another new server. The DNS change will probably take a day or two to propogate to most folks, so in the meantime the old server should be redirecting all traffic to the new one. Let me know if you see anything terribly out of whack.

Canoe Race!!

Friday, April 23rd, 2004

Tomorrow is the Mad Hatter canoe race. Dad and I entering for the 2nd year, and we managed to talk a few other folks into joining us. Mom and Dad are having a shindig at their place afterwards, should be great fun.

We were going to hit the road to Ohio early today, but Fiona’s ear infection is still bothering her. The doc wants to see her today and the only open appointment time is 4:20. So much for getting on the road before traffic! Guess that gives us plenty of time to get packed and ready to go without the stress of trying to beat everybody else in DC out of town. We’ll probably take our time and start out around 7:00 or so instead.
