The Cable Man Cometh

Wednesday, April 17th, 2002

Well, I’ve lost the battle. For almost three years I’ve resisted having cable TV in the house. But a few days ago Comcast pulled out it’s big guns. They offered free cable for the rest of the year and free installation. I know when I’m defeated. This morning I’m sitting around the house waiting for installation dude.

Hi Ho, Hi Ho, It’s off to work I go

This is my first week at Matrix Group. So far it’s been even better than I expected. Seems like a very quality group of people who all work very hard for a company that recognizes and appreciates their efforts. I’m still in the process of learning the tech systems and code base so I’m not doing anything directly productive yet. This is very frustrating because there’s a lot of work to be done and I’m anxious to become involved. Hopefully by the end of the week I’ll be starting to work on some simple bug fixes and changes.

Annapolis and Cumberland

Tuesday, April 9th, 2002

Being Tuesday today is Outing Day with Kristina. We’re heading over to Annapolis this afternoon to browse around. Heather and Joe are meeting us there after they get off work and we’ll all grab dinner someplace.

Ever since being laid off from the Fool I’ve been wanting to bike the C&O Canal Trail. The trail starts in Georgetown and heads north through Cumberland, MD. Actually, it goes almost to Pittsburgh but parts aren’t complete and some road riding is required. I’m planning on taking off Thursday and hopefully arriving in Cumberland on Saturday. Three 60 mile days wouldn’t be too bad if the trail were paved, but it’s dirt and packed gravel. We’ll see how I do. I wouldn’t be surprised if I need 4 days to finish.

I went over to Maki and Joanna’s place yesterday evening to talk about a job opening at their company, Matrix Group. I stopped by their offices today to discuss a few small things and to accept their offer. I’ll be starting Monday. Should be very interesting, and it’ll be fun to work with Todd, Maki and Ben.

Matrix Group creates web sites for trade and business associations. The sites help these groups manage their membership lists, plan events, bill for dues and all sorts of stuff that associations have to do. The offices are just north of Old Town Alexandria, about 5 minutes from home.

Outting Day to Philly

Friday, April 5th, 2002

Last Tuesday Kristina and I trucked on up to Philly for the day. It was a good parking karma day and we got a spot right there near 2nd and South Street. Strolled up South Street stopping in a bunch of the interesting shops. Ate a a good Italian place there. Spent time in a bead store (forget the name). I stink at coming up with designs for these things, but I blew a stupid amount of money to buy some beads to make a fun, whimsical necklace for Heather.

But Horror was just around the corner….

The Dickens Inn, most beloved of South Street drinking/eating establishments, home of many good times, is no more. In it’s place is some renamed, redecorated imposter. I couldn’t bring myself to enter, I was too emotionally shaken up, so I don’t know the extent of the damage. Kristina and I quickly retreated across the street to the comforting familiarity of The Artful Dodger for a couple beers.

Looks like next week’s trip will be to Annapolis. We’re trying to get Joe and Heather to come out and join us when they get off work.
